THE HANGOVER REPORT – SPEAKEASY MAGICK at the McKittrick Hotel is an atmospheric evening of intimate sleight-of-hand

Past my bedtime late this past Saturday night in the Club Car of Chelsea’s McKittrick Hotel (home of the long-running immersive theater hit Sleep No More), I caught Speakeasy Magick, an evening of magic and deception hosted by master magician Todd Robbins. The calling card of the show? — the rare opportunity to experience some of New York’s most talented magicians display their wares just mere inches from you.
The Club Car is the perfect venue for this evening of intimate magic. The cumulative effect is seductively and irresistibly Lynchian – from the hazy and moody lighting, to the space’s period perfect design, to the off-center antics of both the amiable but quirky Mr. Robbins and his the oddball pianist. It’s a world where the unexpected is to be expected.
Atmosphere aside, Speakeasy Magick puts skill front and center in a very personal way. Indeed, you’ll likely be astounded by the trickery that occurs just under your nose. It’s also an excellent way to experience the depth of New York’s “sleight-of-hand” scene, as each magician travels from table to table over the course of the event. Note, that there are more tables than each magician can make it to, so you won’t get to see all of the talent in the room. Perhaps that’s intentional – you’ll simply have to come back to check out what you’ve missed …
