RECENT HIGHLIGHTS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
- Fiasco Theater’s smashing, stripped-down Off-Broadway production of Into the Woods (courtesy of Roundabout) cannot be missed. The much-loved Sondheim tuner benefits tremendously from the sheer joy of Fiasco’s unmatched ability to tell a story in theatrical terms.
- Chameleon-like Reed Birney is acting up storm at the Atlantic in the otherwise disappointing new two-hander by Halley Feiffer entitled I’m Gonna Pray for You So Hard. His sensational, rip-roaring performance alone is worth the visit.
- Under the Radar came to a successful close this past weekend with two winners: Agrupacion Senor Serrano’s (from Spain) inventive anti-establishment Brickman Brando Bubble Boom and Mehr Theatre Group’s (from Iran) haunting and exquisite Timeloss.
- Ensemble Studio Theatre continues to churn out excellent new plays. This time, it’s Maggie Bofill’s winning (if unevenly acted) family comedy, Winners (no pun intended).
- Tony Danza’s performance proves to be the most inspired aspect of Jason Robert Brown’s by-the-books but perfectly enjoyable Honeymoon in Vegas.
