Coal Country has returned to New York at Off-Broadway’s Cherry Lane Theatre after its run was cut short by the pandemic in March 2020. The affecting play-with-music recounts the events leading up to the 2010 West Virginia mine explosion, as well as the aftermath of the tragic event. Originally produced by the Public Theater – where it was met with warm reviews (including my own, which you can read here) – the play’s return engagement is being co-produced by Audible, which in recent years has been increasing its foothold in the live Off-Broadway theater market. The piece was created by the team of Jessica Blank and Erik Jensen (who specialize in pseudo documentary style theater) and features original music written and performed by three-time Grammy Award winner Steve Earle, who also appears in the show.
