Earlier this week, Rita Kalnejais’s structurally daring play This Beautiful Future returned to New York at the Cherry Lane Theatre for a limited six-week run. Jack Serio’s Off-Broadway production about an ill-fated romance during the waning days of World War II was previously seen at TheaterLab earlier this year in January, at which time I raved about it (although I feared it would fly under many theatergoers’ radars).
With the exception of the excellent Uly Schlesinger as Otto (Mr. Schlesinger replaces Justin Mark from the earlier run), the original company has returned to reprise their roles, including the great Austin Pendleton as a wistful karaoke-ing observer. In summary, my thoughts on the play haven’t changed much – you can read my positive review of the previous run here – and I’m happy that more theatergoers will now be able to see this fascinating play.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
